UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor hasn’t been seen in the Octagon since defeating Eddie Alvarez to win the title at UFC 205.
According to UFC President Dana White, the lightweight champion may never compete inside the Octagon ever again.
“Conor might never fight again,” White said at a media luncheon. “The guy’s got $100 (expletive) million. I’ve got guys that made less than that and were lawyers and went to school their whole life and quit working.”
McGregor was last seen in the professional boxing ring, losing to Floyd Mayweather in his pro boxing debut last August.
White believes that all the money McGregor has after a successful combat sports career has changed his viewpoint on fighting again.
“Fighting’s the worst,” White said. “Try to get up and get punched in the face every day when you’ve got $100 million in the bank. Money changes everything with a lot of people.”
If White is right and McGregor never does compete again, then UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Tony Ferguson would become the new UFC Lightweight Champion. Ferguson won the interim lightweight championship when he defeated Kevin Lee by third round submission in the main event of UFC 216 this past October.
