UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes was set to defend her championship against Valentina Shevchenko in the main event of UFC 213, but then pulled out of the fight due to a bout of chronic sinusitis.
Nunes has faced a lot of criticism for her decision, but UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier has come to her defense.
“I don’t believe she was afraid,” Cormier told MMA Junkie Radio. “I believe that she was sick. And if she was sick and could not compete, then she had every right to not compete.”
Cormier has pulled out of a few fights during his career, most notably against Anthony Johnson at UFC 206.
Dana White was one of the people who came out against Nunes after the pull out and according to DC, the UFC President is just an emotional guy.
“Dana is an emotional guy a lot of times,” Cormier said. “He’ll just shoot you straight. In the best of times, he shoots you straight. In the worst of times, he shoots you straight. And I think that’s what you got.”
The UFC President also said the bout is tentatively rescheduled for UFC 215, but nothing has been made official yet.
