UFC President Dana White recently stated that Michael Bisping will no longer be defending the middleweight title against Georges St. Pierre later this year. Instead, the title shot’s going to Yoel Romero and the two will do battle at a yet to be announced date.
The former UFC Welterweight Champion in GSP still has hope that a title shot is coming his way.
“It’s the fight I want and it’s the fight Bisping still wants, from what I’ve heard,” St. Pierre said to MMA Junkie. “I’m focused and I want it, but we’ll see what happens. I still have hope.”
If the bout had gone on as planned, it would’ve been the first fight GSP has had since a self-imposed retirement after UFC 167.
GSP did note that before agreeing to fight for the gold, that the UFC was notified about his other commitment’s that wound up pushing the fight date back until late-2017.
“It’s impossible (to fight before October),” St. Pierre said. “(White) says a lot of things sometimes. I can’t (fight) before October. It’s not only USADA, there’s a lot of commitments like this (Bud Light event) and stuff. I have a lot of commitments. They knew that before.”
While the fight is no longer taking place, it would’ve marked the middleweight division debut for the former welterweight kingpin.
