Kamaru Usman Says UFC Doesn’t Promote Him Due To Heritage

Kamaru Usman is coming off of a knockout victory over Sergio Moraes on the main card of UFC Fight Night Pittsburgh.

The welterweight competitor is of Nigerian heritage and he believes that’s why the UFC hasn’t promoted him properly.

“I’ve been ready for that. I don’t know if they think, ‘Well, he’s from Nigeria and we haven't really broken into that market yet, so we can’t really sell a lot of fights there or we don’t have a TV contract there. So what’s the point of pushing a guy that’s from that area in Africa,’” Usman says on The MMA Hour.

Usman has found a lot of success thus far in the UFC and he has won all six of the fights he has competed at during his time in the promotion.

Other than his Nigerian heritage, the welterweight star doesn’t see any other reason the UFC isn’t pushing him.

“I’d like to think that’s what it is because it can’t be anything else. You can’t say that I don’t have the skills, you can’t say that. I have the skills. You can’t say I don’t have the confidence, because I have that. You can’t say I don’t have the belief, because I have that,” says Usman.

Currently, the Nigerian fighter is ranked #11 in the UFC Welterweight Division and that is the highest ranking he has achieved thus far in the promotion.
