Canelo Alvarez finally got his win over Gennady Golovkin, but there’s still one boxer who has beaten Alvarez: Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Alvarez was only 23 years old when he fought Mayweather in 2013, but Alvarez was unsuccessful in beaten him. It remains the only loss on Alvarez’s professional record and it is one loss that he wishes to avenge.
The Mexican star spoke to Ak and Barak on DAZN about Alvarez wanting to fight Mayweather in a rematch, to which Alvarez responded in the affirmative.
“I would love to, I would love to, I think it’s one of the things I want to strike from my record. I think that it’s one of the thorns I want to take out of my side. When I fought against him, I felt I was ready I felt I could beat him. But experience beat me that night, experience beat me. I was young without much experience, but today, I think I’m a more mature fighter with more experience and the fight would be different,” Alvarez said.
Although Mayweather is retired, he did recently indicate that he wants to come out of retirement again to have a rematch with Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather is 41 years old, but Alvarez said any criticism directed to Alvarez beating Mayweather in his 40s doesn’t bother him as there will always be something negative people say at him.
“The same people, what I told you, the group of people that will say ‘he’s too big, that’s why he won.’ It’s the same thing, but it doesn’t mean anything. I was too young when Floyd beat me. So that group always says stuff against me, that’ll always happen,” Alvarez said.
Even if Alvarez doesn’t get the rematch against Mayweather, the next chapter of his career will be a five-year contract with DAZN that is worth $365 million.
