Canelo Alvarez will sneak in a fight this year after all.
Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) has not boxed professionally since beating Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light heavyweight title. He will return on December 19 to take on WBA super-middleweight champion Callum Smith (27-0, 19 KOs).
Alvarez was released from his Golden Boy Promotions contract approximately two-weeks-ago. The separation from Golden Boy also dissolved his 11-fight, $365 million contract with DAZN. It seems Alvarez and DAZN were able to mend things enough to book one fight.
There is no confirmed location for the event; however, Mike Coppinger of The Athletic claims that Texas will be a likely destination. The state is holding events with a limited number of fans and should be a target for any promotion eager to make live gate revenue.
Alvarez has not lost a professional boxing match since dropping a majority decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. It is the only loss on his pro record.
