Cub Swanson is back in action this Saturday Night at UFC Fight Night Atlantic City, facing former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Frankie Edgar for the second time.
This fight against Edgar is the first for Swanson since signing a new deal with the UFC, but the featherweight star admits he almost signed with a different promotion.
“I was really close to signing with a company,” Swanson said to MMA Junkie Radio. “I was really thinking hard about it. Me and my manager talked about it. I said, ‘Man, I really would like to be with the UFC, and I don’t like how this has all been playing out because I just wish that they would hit me with a number that I felt comfortable with and be happy to push forward.'”
Swanson doesn’t reveal what promotion he almost signed with, but MMA Junkie said that Bellator MMA wasn’t the promotion that the UFC star was thinking about joining.
The newly signed Swanson also was shocked that he was able to secure a second bout against the former UFC Lightweight Champion.
“He wasn’t somebody really on my radar that I thought that I would get a rematch with,” Swanson said. “There are a lot of rematches I could get in the UFC, and that wasn’t one I thought was going to happen any time soon. And then the UFC approached me with it, and I was like, ‘Hell, yeah. Let’s do this.’ I’ve been wanting this one for a while. I just didn’t think it was close.”
UFC Fight Night Atlantic City takes place on Saturday, April 21 from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey with Edson Barboza and Kevin Lee headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which airs live on Fox Sports 1.
