Dan Gable is one of the greatest amateur wrestlers of all time and now the Olympian is being honored with the Presidential Medal Of Freedom.
The legendary wrestler says that earning the President Medal Of Freedom is a lifetime achievement award.
“To get an award like this, it’s a lifetime achievement award, not only for what you did, but for what you continue to do,” Gable said to the Des Moines Register. “People are texting me and calling me, and they’re just like off the wall.”
Gable won the 1972 Olympic 68kg title without surrendering a single point to his opponents, while also earning a record of 181-1 during his days as a high school and college wrestler. Other Olympians to receive the Presidential Medal Of Freedom include Jesse Owens, Muhammad Ali, Pat Summit and Jim Ryun.
A Presidential Medal Of Freedom is awarded “to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
