It was recently announced that UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley is defending the gold against Demian Maia at UFC 214.
No matter who wins the title bout at UFC 214, that winner is going to defend the gold next against former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.
“Georges and I talked a couple days ago when he was in Vegas,” White said to MMA Junkie. “Georges is saying he wants to fight; we’ll get this thing figured out. We’re talking about Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia. These two are going to fight soon. That will free up the 170-pound champion for Georges St-Pierre to return and try to regain his belt.”
GSP was originally set to fight UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping later this year, but the UFC President canceled that fight.
When GSP does make his highly anticipated UFC return, it is going to be the first time that he has competed in four years. GSP never actually lost the title he once held, but relinquished it when he announced his retirement a short time at UFC 167.
UFC 214 takes place on Saturday, July 29 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California with Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
