Donald Cerrone apologized after some ill-advised comments this weekend, but UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier wasn't impressed.
Cerrone trashed Cormier's UFC 200 performance at the UFC Fan Expo Sunday, arguing with fellow panelist CM Punk that Cormier "fought like a fag," by wrestling Anderson Silva in their three round bout. Cerrone later apologized for his statements. Monday, Cormier spoke on his reaction.
"My reaction to Donald is shut up. Has he lost his mind?" Cormier told host Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). "I mean, what was this guy talking about? Donald Cerrone, who made you the person… on what ground does he stand on to be able to say something like that to someone like me?"
Cormier criticized Cerrone for making those statements, saying that Cerrone's resume isn't exactly bulletproof, and mentioned that he hopes his American Kickboxing Academy teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov beats Cerrone down the line. Cormier said that the next time he sees Donald Cerrone, they'll talk about it. In light of recent events, Cormier thought Cerrone's comments were short-sighted.
"It’s very disappointing, especially under those circumstances, with everything that happened in Orlando and everything, he uses that word and those terms. Man, nobody is exempt from just being like… you have to have some class, man. Hey, Donald, this isn’t the wild wild west where you can walk around with your stupid cowboy boots and your hat and spitting tobacco and just talking crazy. You have to have respect and carry yourself with some class," Cormier said.
