McGregor and Poirier met for the first time at UFC 174 in September of 2014, where McGregor scored a first-round TKO win over the future interim lightweight champion. Since their initial meeting over six years ago, both fighters have gone onto win UFC gold, with McGregor becoming a UFC featherweight champion and UFC lightweight champion, while Poirier won the aforementioned interim lightweight championship.

Coach John Kavanagh recently revealed that the bout between the two former lightweight champions could be held at welterweight, as their first encounter at UFC 174 was at lightweight.
