With UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley on the bench nursing a shoulder injury, #3 170 pounder Colby Covington may have to stay active.
Covington spoke to Fightful's James Lynch for a recent interview and revealed he'd been contacted about a possible Ultimate Fighter coaching gig. When asked about the potential of fighting Kamaru Usman, Darren Till or Emil Meek, Covington balked at the idea.
"I've lined myself up for a very big fight. None of those people you mentioned have big names. Maybe Stephen 'Wondergirl' Thompson. He can get taken down and cut up like a pumpkin, too," Covington said. "Dana was talking about a possible interim, so if the interim presents itself against RDA (Rafael dos Anjos), that's an easy fight. I'll walk through RDA and bitch slap Woodley with the interim title."
Despite his willingness to take on the former UFC Lightweight Champion in Rafael dos Anjos, Covington wasn't the least bit moved by his performance at UFC Winnipeg against Robbie Lawler.
"It wasn't that exciting of a performance. He looks slow, he looks weak, he has no knockout power. Rafael dos Anjos looked like the JV Squad that I said. Robbie Lawler is the most hit fighter in UFC history. He's shot from it, he's trigger shy. He can't even react or act. That's not an impressive performance," Covington told us.
Covington went a step further with his criticism of Lawler, even saying that he hopes the well-traveled former UFC champion hangs up his gloves.
"As a guy who used to know Robbie, I hope he hangs it up. I hope the people close to him tell him to retire. He's not on any good, world class level anymore. He looked bad, and RDA looked like a bum," said Covington.
In the full interview, Colby Covington (13-1) discusses his recent Twitter feuds and why he's only interested in fighting Tyron Woodley next. Colby also talks about potentially coaching The Ultimate Fighter, why Rafael Dos Anjos won't fight him and Star Wars spoilers.
