The list of opponents Miguel Cotto has faced throughout his legendary career is massive, but according to Cotto, one particular undefeated boxer is considered the best he has faced.
During a media scrum in New York City where Fightful was at, Cotto talked about the best opponent he has ever faced in his 17-year career. Cotto said Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the best he has fought.
"You can say that it would be Floyd Mayweather. He was really smart," Cotto said.
The two fought back in 2012 with Mayweather picking up the win via unanimous decision and Cotto's WBA junior middleweight world title as well. But Mayweather isn't the only noteworthy name Cotto has encountered in the past two decades. Cotto has fought the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Sergio Martinez, Canelo Alvarez, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley and many more. Despite some of his biggest fights being losses, Cotto said he wouldn't cange a thing about his career.
"I enjoy every moment of my career. I think that I love everything that happened in my career. [I would call this fight] the final chapter. What happened, happened. If I did something different, I wouldn't be here. I have enjoyed every moment of my career," Cotto said.
That final chapter will be Cotto's upcoming fight against Sadam Ali, headlining an HBO Championship Boxing card. You can check out a timeline of Miguel Cotto's pro career on this week's edition of the Fightful Boxing Newsletter at this link.
Fightful will provide live coverage from Madison Square Garden on December 2. Cotto vs. Ali will be for Cotto's WBO junior middleweight championship. Despite Cotto being the world champion, he has stated that this fight will be the last fight of his career.
