Gervonta Davis scored a strong KO victory over Frank Martin, taking his record to 30-0.
In his first fight in 14 months, Gervonta Davis took on Frank Martin at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and while he appeared to be showing some signs of rust at first, he knocked out Martin with a left hook in just shy of 90 seconds of the 8th round to successfully defend his WBA Lightweight Championship.
"Yeah, there's a little rust, but it's OK. I'm back," Davis said in a post-fight interview (via ESPN). "A couple rounds, I feel as though I ain't warm up completely how I wanted to. I did warm up, but I got cold as the fight was going on before me. But it's OK. No excuses."
This was also Davis's first fight since serving a 44-day stint in a Baltimore jail for violating the terms of his house arrest following a hit-and-run crash in November 2020.
As for what Davis had to say about the knockout blow that finished the fight, he cited his almost lifelong training and said that it's always his goal to come out on top.
"Boom, that's what it was," Davis said of the left hand that finished the fight. "The brick just finished it off. I've been training since I was 7 years old, competing since I was 8. You know what I mean? So it's like a second nature, you know what I mean? It's just about staying focused and making sure my mind is on the goal, and that's always to come out on top."
