Jake Ellenberger Scores Huge Upset, Saves UFC Career At UFC 201

Going into UFC 201, many thought that it was a foregone conclusion that Jake Ellenberger would be on his way out of the UFC.

Ellenberger had actually already been cut, before being brought back to fight Matt Brown in what was seen by many as a way to get the skidding Brown back on the horse. Jake Ellenberger had other plans, and let them be known at UFC 201.

Ellenberger walked into the show having lost five of six fights, going on a downslide after leaving Rafael Cordeiro and King's MMA. The decision to return proved to be a good one, as Ellenberger dropped #9-ranked Brown right out of the gate. Brown was able to recover, and looked to be in control shortly after, with Ellenberger slowing down. Brown was caught with a filthy liver kick, which have been his kryptonite, and tumbled to the mat. Ellenberger followed up with huge strikes to gain the victory just over 90 seconds in.

After the fight, Ellenberger credited his team and Cordeiro. Ellenberger's UFC resume now boasts victories over Brown, Jake Shields, Nate Marquardt and Josh Koscheck.

"Matt is a hell of a fighter," Ellenberger said. "I want to thank everyone at Kings MMA. For me, I had to refocus. I was trying to finish, but Matt has shown in the past he's extremely durable. I just have to stop being so damn nice."
