At UFC 295, Tom Aspinall won the Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship by defeating Sergei Pavlovich.
Jon Jones was originally set to defend his UFC Heavyweight Title against Stipe Miocic at the event, but the fight was canceled due to a pectoral injury suffered by Jones.
Aspinall has gone on to defend his Interim Heavyweight Title against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304, while Jones is finally set to return at UFC 309.
Speaking to Aaron Bronsteter, Jones said the Interim Heavyweight Title wasn't necessary to begin with and that it was only created to keep the importance of UFC 295 being held at Madison Square Garden.
Jones said making it an Interim Title fight was premature and now there are confused fans.
Jon Jones clarifies that the heavyweight title would not necessarily have to be at stake if he were to fight Alex Pereira and he has another belt in mind.
