UFC Interim Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo is hoping that Conor McGregor is his next opponent, but he's open to other options.
In an interview with the Daily Star, Aldo responded to UFC Bantmamweight Champion Dominick Cruz's proposal for a superfight. While Aldo actually complimented Cruz for suggesting the bout, Aldo thinks it's brought on by Conor McGregor jumping weight classes, and says if he has his way, he'll fight McGregor first.
“I think it’s great that Dominick is saying that,” said Aldo. “It’s a new phase we’re going through. Conor did that, so everybody is trying to mirror him. I like that. I hope it happens, that this fight can happen in the future. But first, I need to become the undisputed champion."
Cruz, who formerly competed as a featherweight, told ESPN's Brett Okamoto that he'd prefer a fight with Aldo over a re-match with TJ Dillashaw.
“Who knows? McGregor could get hurt in this fight against (Nate) Diaz ( at UFC 202). They’d need someone to fight for the interim title. I’m willing to fight for the interim (featherweight) title and bring two belts together. Why not? I would do that in a heartbeat," said Cruz.
Currently, both Aldo and Cruz are awaiting scheduling of their next fight.
