Kelvin Gastelum hasn’t been seen in the Octagon since defeating Ronaldo Souza by decision at UFC 224.
Robert Whittaker is the current UFC Middleweight Champion and Gastelum believes that he can provide the biggest challenge to the title holder.
“I know that he’s been offered the fight against me twice and he has not been wanting to fight me,” Gastelum said on The MMA Hour. “And I think that’s for good reason. I think I give him the most difficult time if we step in the cage and I think he knows that. In my opinion, I match up horribly for him.”
Gastelum is one of three people in the UFC Middleweight Division top five that Whittaker has yet to fight, with the other two being former middleweight champions Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman.
Weidman has been campaigning for the next title shot, since the former champion holds a win over Gastelum, but Gastelum gives some evidence as to why he should get the next opportunity.
“Chris Weidman thinks that he should get the shot over me?” Gastelum said. “I was ranked ninth when he fought me. He was coming off a three-fight skid. Since we fought, I’ve fought two top-five guys, two former champions.”
It is going to be a little while before anybody gets the next title shot, as Whittaker is currently out of action with a hand injury.
