Luke Rockhold says Jon Jones has had too many chances.
This week, Jon Jones was stripped of his UFC Light-heavyweight Championship after an anti-doping violation. His victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 was overturned by the California State Athletic Commission to a no-contest. Daniel Cormier regained his championship since he never technically lost it.
Former UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold was asked about the Jones situation on the MMA Report podcast by host Mike Gunzelman. Rockhold said it was an unfortunate thing for the sport.
“It’s a sad day in our sport. It’s unfortunate that this man has to go down that path. So much talent and he shoots himself in the foot every step of the way," said Rockhold.
Jones dominated the UFC Light-heavyweight division for years. He did spend some time away from mixed-martial-arts because of another drug test failure and legal issues. Rockhold spoke to these issues and had harsh words for the former champion Jones.
“He dominated everybody in the sport. He seemingly needed a little boost in confidence along the way. It’s sad. I definitely think he could have potentially done what he has done in some fashion, but he cut corners and he cheated and people have to realize that," said Rockhold. “He’s had 3, 4, 5 shots, man. The hit and run with the pregnant lady? Come on. The DUI? It’s sad to look back at what he’s done and gotten away with and he just keeps going. I feel for his family and the people around him. I hope everyone else is well," he added.
Jones failed his test for Turinabol which is an anabolic steroid. He is expected to appeal any suspension he is given but he faces two to four years because this is not his first drug test failure.
