Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris were supposed to meet at both UFC Fight Night Washington DC and UFC Fight Night Portland, but those encounters never came to fruition.
It appears that the third time is going to be the charm as the duo will headline a May 16 UFC card, which Harris announced via Instagram:
Here is the transcript of what Harris said in the video, provided by Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie:
“We got a fight. May 16. Alistair Overeem and myself will be fighting at an undisclosed location in the main event. Y’all can look forward to that, I’m looking forward to it. We’re going to put on a show for you guys.”
May 16 was the original date for UFC Fight Night San Diego, which was supposed to be headlined by former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker. The status of that card is unknown as of this writing, but more should be known in the coming days.
Overeem (45-18-0-1NC) has won two of his last three under the UFC banner, with those victories coming over Alexey Oleinik and Sergei Pavlovich. Harris (13-7-0-1NC) enters the contest on a two fight winning streak and he hasn’t been defeated in over two years.
UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Harris takes place on Saturday, May 16 from the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida with Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, while broadcast plans have yet to be announced.
