Matt Sayles made his UFC debut at UFC 227, coming up on the wrong side of a unanimous decision to Sheymon Moraes.
The fighter was also on the wrong end of several eye pokes from Moraes during the encounter, which has lead to a torn retina.
Ariel Helwani of ESPN is reporting via Twitter than not only does Sayles have a torn retina, but is getting surgery to fix the issue:

Matt Sayles suffered a torn retina as a result of the multiple eye pokes suffered in his loss to Sheymon Moraes at UFC 227, according to his team. He’s undergoing laser eye surgery tomorrow. Worth noting, no points were deducted during the fight. pic.twitter.com/E1tvOdaf2Y
It is unknown at this time as to how long Sayles is going to be out of action for, but more should be known as the fighter recovers from surgery.
Sayles earned a spot on the UFC roster after an appearance on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series Episode 10, where he defeated Yazan Hajeh by first round TKO. Like Helwani said in his tweet, none of the eyes pokes from Moraes lead to any sort of point deduction or punishment from the referee.
