Welcome to Fightful.com's results, live coverage, and discussion for the highly-anticipated Lightweight World Title fight between Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr.
We will bring you full live coverage and results for today's card, taking place inside the Hulu Theater inside New York City's Madison Square Garden. Lopez will be defending the IBF, WBO, WBA, WBC, The Ring Lightweight Titles.
A National Golden Gloves gold medalist, Lopez made his boxing debut in 2016. After winning lightweight titles within the North American Boxing Association, Lopez's path to glory would start when he beat Masayoshi Nakatani in July 2019. He would end 2019 by beating Richard Commey via TKO for the IBF Lightweight Title. Almost a year later, Lopez would dethrone Vasiliy Lomachenko to win the WBA, WBO, and The Ring titles. The 24-year-old is looking to secure his role within the division and is hoping to win more titles within it.
Kambosos Jr. made his debut in 2013. A former WBA Oceania Lightweight Champion, Kambosos Jr. made his United States boxing debut in 2018. Kambosos Jr. last fought in October, beating Lee Selby via split decision.
It has been a wild ride to get to this moment.
The fight was initially planned for Miami this past summer, with Triller the ones in charge of planning everything. Lopez would test positive for COVID-19, however, which resulted in a wild chain of events that cost Triller a lot of money. Triller attempted to move the fight to multiple dates, some during a weekday. The fight would then be up against major sporting events, and Triller even tried to have the fight take place in places like Australia and the Middle East.
Contract disputes, legal battles, and callouts resulted in Triller, who took Lopez from Top Rank, losing their newly-signed fighter and the clash. Matchroom Boxing's Eddie Hearn would then take over, securing the fight for good. Lopez is expected to return to Top Rank after this fight.
Fightful will be providing results, highlights, and everything else in-between for Lopez-Kambosos Jr.
