Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero will do battle for the vacant UFC Interim Middleweight Title at UFC 213.
The winner is expected to challenge UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping to create an undisputed champion later this year.
Whittaker is happy to be fighting Romero, even happier than he is to be fighting for an interim title.
“Probably,” Whittaker said on Submission Radio. “Let’s be honest, I like fighting tough dudes, and more than the interim belt I’m excited to fight Yoel Romero. He’s been like number one contender since practically he got up there and I want to fight him.”
Whomever walks out with the interim championship at UFC 213 will walk out of the Octagon with the first championship of their career.
Romero has had some USADA related issues in the past, but that is not something that concerns Whittaker.
“Nah, it’s like, whatever,” Whittaker said. “It is what it is. He can do whatever he wants. It’s not gonna help him.”
UFC 213 takes place on Saturday, July 8 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
