Thiago Santos Suffered Extensive Damage To Left Knee At UFC 239

Thiago Santos competed in the main event of UFC 239, suffering a split decision loss to UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.

A defeated Santos may have gone down in defeat this past Saturday Night, but he did so while competing on one leg.

Combate is reporting that Santos went for an MRI yesterday, with the tests showing that the fighter’s left knee meniscus and all the ligaments in that knee have been torn. The damage to the knee is so severe that the fighter will need surgery and will most likely be out of action until the middle of next year.

The fighter’s right knee, which had surgery done on it months before the bout, may need surgery as well, but the extent of the damage to that knee is unknown at this time.

There has been no word given at this time as to when Santos is expected to have the surgery done on the left knee or where that surgery will take place at.

While Santos did go down in defeat to Jones at UFC 239, one thing the fighter did accomplish was to become the first person to take Jones to a split decision in the light heavyweight champion’s professional MMA career.
