-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EARLY PRELIMS
Gregor Gillespie defeated Glaico Franca via unanimous decision (29-27, 29-27, 29-27): Gillespie looked strong in his UFC debut. His game plan was pretty basic: Use various boxing combinations to set up several takedown attempts. He was successful at various times in the fight, but Franca did block a few takedown attempts as well. Franca did start off well in the fight, but exhausted himself with his high-octane offense, which gave Gillespie room to get in a groove.
Vicente Luque defeated Hector Urbina via KO (punches), Round 1, 1:00: Luque pressured Urbina with great striking from the get go, rocking Urbina with a big left hook. Urbina got put in the cage and then Luque rocked him with several punches square in the jaw, ending with a great right hook to finish the fight. Luque's now on a three-fight win streak.
Alan Patrick defeated Stevie Ray via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27): This fight had its moments, but overall, it was a very ground game heavy fight. Not a lot of brawling in this fight, but Patrick did control the fight for the vast majority of it. Patrick came in as the underdog, but did good work on takedowns and transitions.
PRELIMINARY FIGHTS
Erick Silva defeated Luan Chagas by TKO (rear naked choke), Round 3, 3:57: This was a very fun fight to watch. Chagas rocked Silva at various points of the fight, but both guys were exhausted by the start of the third round. Silva telegraphed and attack by Chagas, stepped behind him and then beautifully applied the rear naked choke and Chagas quickly tapped. The fight had everything: big hits that could have finished the fight, solid ground game and the crowd was into it from the very beginning. This fight is an early contender for Fight of the Night bonus.
Jussier Formiga defeated Dustin Ortiz via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-27): This was a systematic beatdown by Formiga. This bout mainly took place on the ground with Formiga staying on top of Ortiz. Formiga had been going for a rear naked choke finish, but even when he couldn't lock it in properly, he managed to put a lot of pressure on Ortiz in the first two rounds. The third round saw a lot of more stand up fighting until Formiga got on top of Ortiz once more. This may not have been the prettiest performance in terms of big strikes, but Formiga put on a clinic had a great performance tonight.
Rani Yahya defeated Michinori Tanaka via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28): This was yet another fight that pretty much stayed on the ground for most of the 15 minutes contested there. Like Formiga in the previous fight, Yahya put on a clinic, but opted more towards what Dominick Cruz called during the broadcast "constrictor jiu-jitsu," trying to slowly choke Tanaka out. Tanaka couldn't get anything going as he spent the majority of the fight trying to fight out of the ground. This was a solid performance by Yahya.
Michel Prazeres defeated Gilbert Burns via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27): Both of these men had a slugfest tonight. It was a far cry from the last two fights, which were grapple-heavy, and instead, we saw more of a boxing fight. Prazeres connected on some very good 1-2 punch combinations and got some good takedowns. While Burns did pull off some good hits, there really was no chance he could go toe-to-toe with Prazeres in a striking match.
MAIN CARD
Godofredo Pepey vs. Mike De La Torre
Round 1: Both fighters start the fight off swinging for the fences, but Pepey throws a huge barrage of punches, flying knees, spinning back knees, everything he can to take out De La Torre early, but the most he can do is stagger him momentarily. Pepey manages to get De La Torre to the ground and ends connecting on the rear naked choke and forces De La Torre to tap.
Official Result: Godofredo Pepey defeated Mike De La Torre via submission (rear naked choke), Round 1, 3:03
Well that first round was fun. Pepey threw everything but the kitchen sink at De La Torre and credit to him for lasting that long before being forced to submit.
Thiago Santos vs. Eric Spicely
Round 1: Spicely goes for a takedown at the start of the round and is preventing Santos from getting up, until he does about a minute in a half into the fight. Santos throws a few punches, but Spicely once again takes down his opponent, trying to hit a Kimura Lock. He's unsuccessful, but instead, manages to get on top of a standing Santos and connects on a rear naked choke and forces Santos to submit.
Official Result: Eric Spicely defeated Thiago Santos via submission (rear naked choke), Round 1, 2:58
Well deserved win for Spicely. He was a big underdog heading into this fight and executed his ground game very well.
Francisco Trinaldo vs. Paul Felder
Round 1: Felder goes for some low kicks to start things off. Both men then proceed to kick each other, but then they start swinging punches at each other. Felder keeps kicking and hits a spinning backfist on Trinaldo. Felder goes for a knee and Trinaldo responds by pressuring Felder to the cage and throws some big punches. They then clinch, occasionally throwing some inside strikes. Felder escapes and throws a spin kick, but misses. The two men once again exchange strikes as the first round ends.
Fightful scores round 1 for Felder 10-9
Round 2: The two men begin to exchange several punches at each other. Felder goes for kicks to Trinaldo's right leg while Trinaldo tries to hit him with the left hand. He does so, but Felder is largely unfazed by it. Trinaldo takes down Felder and Trinaldo tries to throw hammer fists at Felder. Felder got a big cut around his right eye and is bleeding badly. Felder eventually manages to get right back up, but Trinaldo is still on top of him. Felder keeps his balance and throws a spinning elbow to escape as the round ends.
Fightful scores round 2 for Trinaldo 10-9
Round 3: Trinaldo hits a big left high kick to Felder's head as Felder remains in the center of the octagon. Felder misses with a roundhouse kick of his own. Felder is not looking to go for high kicks as he misses a crescent kick to Trinaldo. Both men remains standing up as they clinch and Felder's back is to the cage. Felder's right eye is too badly damaged, but the referee and doctor stops the fight and awards Trinaldo the win.
Official Result: Francisco Trinaldo defeated Paul Felder via TKO (doctor stoppage), Round 3, 2:25
Kind of an anticlimactic finish to this fight, but Felder's right eye was way too much of a mess for the referee and ringside doctor, in good conscience, allow the fight to continue.
Roy Nelson vs. Antonio Silva
Round 1: Silva is going for some leg kicks and Nelson tries to go for body punches. Nelson lunges for forward for some punches to Silva, and Silva is able to throw a right hook and a leg kick to Silva. Silva responds with a couple of punches on his own. Nelson lands an overhead punch and goes for a takedown attempt, but is not successful, only pushing Silva to the cage and both men clinch. The to men only throw some weak punches as the round ends.
Fightful scores round 1 for Nelson 10-9
Round 2: Silva hits a couple of kicks to Nelson but Nelson seems unfazed. Silva tries to hit a couple of kicks, but misses as Nelson does not throw a lot of punches. Silva telegraphs a right punch and hits one on Nelson. Silva kicks Nelson in the "family jewels" and the fight was paused and gets a warning from the referee. Silva then goes on the attack, but Nelson has the underhook on while he has his bac to the cage. Left hook, right uppercut combo from Nelson. Silva goes for a takedown, but Nelson defends himself well. Silva stuns Nelson with a right hand punch. Another kick from Silva hits and Nelson lands a big uppercut, sending him to the ground and Nelson ends the fight with a few punches.
Official Result: Roy Nelson defeated Antonio Silva by KO (punches), Round 2, 4:10
Renan Barao vs. Phillipe Nover
Round 1: Barao and Nover throw a couple of jabs and kicks to the outside, trying to feel each other out and get into a rhythm. Barao hits a 1-2 punch combo and Nover hits a high kick. Barao then follows it up with a left and right hook. Barao then lunges forward, but nothing happens afterwards. The round ends with nothing really eventful going on.
Fightful scores round 1 for Barao 10-9
Round 2: Barao throws a couple of punches and is going on the attack. Barao hits a flying knee amidst an offensive burst of punches while Nover occasionally throws a few kicks. Nover manages to hit a left jab. Barao lands a few good strikes and hits a low kick to Nover. The two men exchange a couple of punches and Barao throws a spin kick and takes down Nover to end the round.
Fightful scores round 2 for Barao 10-9
Round 3: Barao keeps throwing punches ad while they do not land all the time, it does put pressure on Nover. The two clinch and Barao takes down Nover as Nover tries to elbow his way out. Nover slips away and the two are back to punching each other. Nover goes for a jumping knee and then they clinch once more. The two remain in the center of the octagon, but not throwing a lot. Barao hits an overhand punch and body kick. Nover hits an overhead punch of his own. Barao tries to take down Nover, but it takes him a little bit to accomplish it as the fight ends.
Fightful scores round 3 for Barao 10-9, giving the win to Barao 30-27
Official Result: Renan Barao defeated Phillipe Nover via unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28, 30-27)
Cris Cyborg vs. Lina Lansberg
Round 1: Cyborg puts pressure by lunging forward towards Lansberg and the two clinch. Cyborg hits a couple of knees while still clinched up. The two separate and Cyborg lands a couple of good hits as the two clinch again. Cyborg goes for some more knee strikes and they're still clinched, but Cyborg slams Lansberg down and hits some huge hammer fists. Lansberg manages to stay alive (figuratively), but Cyborg still keeps the pressure on with several punches that could have ended the fight. Round ends.
Fightful scores round 1 for Cyborg 10-8
Round 2: Lansberg immediately eats a dozen punches and kicks and somehow manages to stay up in the fight. Another takedown from Cyborg and she keeps hitting hammer fists and elbows. Lansberg is busted open and given almost no room to breathe. Cyborg continues the onslaught and the fight and the referee stops the fight.
Official Result: Cris Cyborg defeated Lina Lansberg via TKO (punches), Round 2, 2:29
This was nothing short of a massacre. Lansberg took everything that Cyborg threw at her and she hung in tough, but this was the expected result. Cyborg was just too much for her.
