The spectacle that was the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight from August 26 certainly had a lot of parallels with WWE and Triple H believes so as well.
Mayweather defeated McGregor via 10th round TKO in a pay-per-view event that UFC president Dana White claims broke the all-time pay-per-view record Mayweather set two years ago. Triple H, one of WWE's most decorated champions, appeared on ESPN's First Take show and thought the fight was a success on all fronts, including the marketing and promotion, some of which did retain some aspects of WWE's sports entertainment style.
"I think from a promotional standpoint, it did a lot of things right. They found two personalities and that's what really this is all about. Floyd will be the first to tell you, personalities sell fights. It's what he does. He's changed himself from 'Pretty Boy' Floyd to 'Money' Mayweather and that was based around WWE and the culture change like Hulk Hogan turning to Hollywood Hulk Hogan and reinventing yourself, changing your persona. McGregor created that persona, a lot of it has to do with what WWE does and what Mayweather does. When you have two personalities like that and you put them in the ring, in that type of conflict, it's what we do on a daily basis. But they did it very well. It was a moment in time that I don't think you can replicate. The thing I think people were afraid of was that it wouldn't deliver. I think it did deliver. I think it ended up being an entertaining 10-round fight," Triple H said.
Part of Mayweather's personality isn't just inspired by WWE, however. The undefeated boxer even competed for the company at one WrestleMania show, defeating Big Show in a marquee matchup at WrestleMania 24.
