AJ Styles Suggested Cody Rhodes Kick Out Of Burning Hammer At One

At WWE Backlash France, Cody Rhodes made the first defense of the Undisputed WWE Championship against AJ Styles.

During the match, Styles hit a burning hammer, a devastating move made famous by Kenta Kobashi. Rhodes kicked out at one and fired up.

Styles spoke with Rhodes on What Do You Want To Talk About? when the conversation shifted to knowing the time and place to fire up after a big move or a series of moves. During the conversation, the burning hammer was brought up.

“Do you know how much heat I got for having you do it? The burning hammer. I suggested that he fire up out of that on one. We needed something big. I know it’s the burning hammer, but it’s AJ Styles’ burning hammer, it’s not Kenta Kobashi’s burning hammer. It’s way different. It’s not the same. I can’t do it as well as him,” said Styles.

Rhodes added, “My joke was, whenever I’m asked about it or I think about getting a little salty with it, my joke is, ‘Well, it’s not AJ’s finish. AJ busted it out for the first time ever.’ I’m really glad you brought this up because it was something you suggested and it was wonderful that you suggested it and it was something to try. I love a challenge.”

Rhodes was victorious in the bout, making the first successful defense of his title.

The two would battle a month later in an “I Quit” match, which was also won by Rhodes.
