Adam Cole Discusses Tweaking His Style, AEW Using Comedy In Matches

Despite being just 32 years old, Adam Cole is already a well-traveled veteran in the world of wrestling, competing in top Independent promotions such as PWG and ROH before making his way to NXT and now AEW.

As he's gone from promotion to promotion, Cole has constantly evolved his style and enjoys working to the strengths of his opponents.

"I felt this way in NXT, Ring of Honor, and PWG; I feel like I'm constantly tweaking my style in some capacity," Cole told Brandon Walker on Rasslin'. "A long time ago, I made the decision that I don't want there to necessarily be a formula to an Adam Cole match, promo, or segment. A lot of times, I like to do stuff based on what my opponent likes to do because that keeps what I'm doing fresh and different in a lot ways so people can't necessarily predict where we're going. If I'm working with one guy who maybe likes to do more high-flying stuff, I like to do that. If someone likes to brawl a bit more, I like to do that. If I'm working with someone who likes to throw comedy in there, I do that as well. I definitely want to be someone who constantly changes based on who I'm in there with. In that sense, have there been some small changes? Yes, but that largely depends on who I'm in there with."

Cole has had to change his style to take a more comedic approach in recent weeks as he's been feuding with Orange Cassidy, who is known for his comedy work before turning it up when he needs to.

Some fans have criticized the comedy spots, but Cole believes it's working, even in the matches.

"They [AEW] very much know their audience and know what they look for and they've been able to entertain that audience because they do understand the tongue-in-cheek style comedy. It's not for everybody, some people maybe don't like it or enjoy it and that's okay. People are allowed to not enjoy it or like it. If we're doing a certain thing and the live audience, if you can feel in the building that everyone is having the time of their life, and if you look at the crowd and people have huge smile's on their faces, then it worked. It's exactly what we were going for. The beautiful thing about pro wrestling is that there are so many different styles and ways to approach things. Again, if you buy a ticket or watch the product. you're allowed to feel how you want to feel," he said.

Cole and Orange Cassidy are set to be in opposing corners on Wednesday's AEW Dynamite as Cole accompanies The Young Bucks against Chuck Taylor & Rocky Romero, who will be cornered by OC.

Fightful will have live coverage of AEW Dynamite beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
