Alberto Del Rio and WWE are no longer in a working relationship, with WWE announcing his release early September 9.
WWE.com posted the following announcement:
STAMFORD, Conn. — WWE and Jose Rodriguez (Alberto Del Rio) have mutually agreed upon the terms of his release as of today, September 9, 2016.
It has been a shaky past few months for Del Rio. After returning to WWE last fall, beating John Cena for the United States championship at the 2015 Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, he has gradually been placed lower on the card. His relationship with Paige reportedly had WWE management upset, with officials trying to end the relationship to Triple H, according to reports, saying that Del Rio has been a bad influence on her.
Both Del Rio and Paige had been serving a 30-day suspension for violating WWE's Wellness Policy for the first time, with both announcements happening within hours of each other. As for Paige's future with the company, there are unconfirmed rumors that she has quit WWE and hired legal representation.
Del Rio's last televised match was a loss to John Cena on the August 16 episode of SmackDown Live. Del Rio was slated to have a press conference in his native Mexico to discuss his WWE future on September 9 as well. Del Rio is a former WWE Champion and World Heavyweight Champion. His first stint in WWE went from 2010-2014.
