Most of the time in wrestling, referees don't need to change their name as the best referees are typically invisible.
But for Aubrey Edwards, she wanted to change her name to avoid any confusion with Britt Baker in case the two ran into each other on the Independent scene.
"My name is Brittany," said Aubrey on Talk Is Jericho. "One of the first things I noticed on the Indies is, anytime I work with a promotion, they'll throw me in a women's match because there's people who don't think women should ref men's matches or they like the image of only women in the ring. I thought, 'I'm probably going to cross paths with Britt Baker, I should probably come up with a different name, just to limit confusion. I show up [to AEW] and no one knows who I am. I introduce myself as Aubrey everywhere, but I prefer Brittany backstage, which causes confusion because Britt [jokes], 'you're not allowed to have that name.' 'Bitch, I'm older than you, it was my name first' [laughs]. My dad's name was Edward Aubert, so my wrestling name is Aubrey Edwards. He passed away when I was 12. He never saw any of this, but he'd get a huge kick out of it. I wanted something that was important to me."
Aubrey went on to say that everyone assumes Aubrey is her real name since referees rarely use stage names and that she likes working with Britt Baker as Britt trusts her in the ring and will rely on her for spots.
Baker revealed on an episode of AEW Unrestricted that Aubrey helped take care of her at Fyter Fest 2019 when Baker suffered a concussion. You can find her full comments by clicking here.
