With the deal, Velasquez will avoid receiving a mandatory life sentence, as premeditation allegations were dropped in relation to the case.

A sentencing hearing for Velasquez has been scheduled for October 18, 2024. East Bay Times notes that an actual sentencing is not expected until the end of the year.

The charges against Velasquez stem from a car chase in 2022 when he shot at a man multiple times after he was accused of molesting his son. During the chase and shooting, Velasquez injured the man's stepfather.
