Carlito Recalls John Cena Telling Him To Use The Backstabber As His Finisher, 'It Just Took Off From There'

John Cena told Carlito to use the backstabber as a finisher.

Carlito's first run in WWE is often remembered for two things: apples and backstabbers. Carlito's signature manuever helped him put away many opponents and win a number of top prizes in WWE. As it turns out, John Cena was the man that suggested the move as a finisher to Carlito.

“I took a liking to the backstabber. I remember Cena was one of the first ones to point it out to me, he goes, ‘Man, that looks like a great move, you should use it as a finisher.’ I was like, eh. But he kind kept on getting me to try and do it so I was like, ‘Alright’, you know what I mean? Nobody else does a move like that. That’s it, and then it just took off from there." Carlito said while speaking on the latest episode of WWE Retrospective.

Carlito and Cena tangled in eight singles matches throughout the 2000s. As it currently stands, Cena holds four wins over Carlito, while Carlito owns three wins over Cena. Carlito and Cena also wrestled to a no contest on a 2005 episode of SmackDown.
