Cody Rhodes says he found out he was losing the match at WrestleMania 39 against Roman Reigns for the WWE Undisputed Championship when he lost the match.
Cody Rhodes won the 2023 WWE Royal Rumble and was determined to finish the story by finally capturing the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship from Roman Reigns. As we all know now, with Cody preparing to defeat Roman Reigns at WrestleMania XL, he was unsuccessful in his first attempt.
Given the predetermined nature of professional wrestling, it's natural to ask Cody when he found out he was losing what was, up until that point, the biggest match of his career.
During Cody's appearance on the MMA Hour, Ariel Helwani did just that. Cody decided to "print the legend" and proclaim that he found out he was losing to Roman Reigns when the referee's hand hit the mat for a third time at WrestleMania 39.
It’s a great question. I’m of the thought that — there is a movie ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.’ There is a quote in there that I keep getting wrong. ‘When the fact becomes legend, print the legend.’ For the purpose of this answer and that question, what I’ll tell you is that I found out in the ring, in the moment that he hit me with the spear and pinned me one-two-three. That’s when I found out," Cody claimed.
When it was retorted that there was "surely" a conversation beforehand, Cody responded, "I would say not surely."
