Cody Rhodes Says He Probably Wouldn't Be WWE Champion If Not For Roman Reigns Returning At WWE SummerSlam

Cody Rhodes addresses the return of Roman Reigns.

Cody Rhodes retained his WWE Championship over Solo Sikoa at WWE SummerSlam. Not only did he have the help of known allies Randy Orton and Kevin Owens, but he also received unlikely assistance from Roman Reigns. This was the first time Roman returned since losing to Cody at WWE WrestleMania XL, and Cody knows that he owes Reigns more than a debt of gratitude.

Speaking to Krista B of Those Wrestling Girls at the WWE SummerSlam post-show press conference, Rhodes addressed the return of his great rival, admitting that he was trying not to be too positive given their rocky relationship.

"I don't want to fill the room with positive platitudes and hot air about the real 'Tribal Chief' Roman Reigns returning. But without a doubt, that probably would have gone a different way; I probably wouldn't be sitting here with the North Star of the industry had it not been for Roman Reigns. So he's certainly I've got quite a list of people who I owe one. I might owe him more than one. Again, no love loss. That's as much a shoot as it gets. There's a unique relationship, I suppose. I haven't seen or spoken to him since WrestleMania. I think the WWE fans, wrestling fans, the WWE Universe, they wanted him, and SummerSlam delivered and gave him, and that I'm always very happy about."

Chris Van Vliet would follow up and ask what happens next for Cody and the WWE Championship. Cody would say that he knows there's a third match between himself and Roman Reigns on the horizon and it's not necessarily something he's looking forward to, but he's always ready.

"Certainly, Roman Reigns is entitled to not just a rematch; I mean, Roman Reigns held this title for so long, that match, it has to happen. It's one of those where, to a degree, you're not supposed to say this when you're a babyface, but it's rather scary. I've been in there twice with him, and brother hits hard. So, the idea of that is there, too. I don't know if anyone saw it, but I was tapping the title because I know there's a third one somewhere down the line. I know I'm not his friend. He didn't do that for me. He did that because of what's happened with The Bloodline and Solo. I think that's something to stay tuned for, probably on SmackDown, for a sense of what happens with The Bloodline.

"The Bloodline has been the anchor of WWE for some time, and what happens next, not just with Solo, not just with Roman, but Jacob Fatu, who is, as we all can see, there's something unbelievable. I don't have to like him to tell you that there's something special there, but there's a lot of match options that are in front of us and that's for [Triple H] to kind of decide what happens next. I'm always ready."
