Drew McIntyre points out a key difference between CM Punk and Wolverine.

CM Punk suffered a torn triceps at WWE Royal Rumble. Drew McIntyre told Punk that he prayed for the injury, and they have been feuding ever since. The rivalry continued to escalate throughout the next few months, leading into WWE SummerSlam, where Punk made his in-ring return and faced McIntyre.

Speaking with Sam Roberts ahead of WWE SummerSlam, (via Notsam Wrestling), Drew McIntyre was asked about keeping the feud going while Punk was out hurt. He joked that Punk did not have a superhuman healing factor like Wolverine, and that let him take the feud all the way.

“I can just be thankful that, talk about something topical since ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is pretty big right now. A torn tricep takes about three, four months to recover from. Thankfully, Punk is, when it comes to recovering, the opposite of Wolverine [laughs]. It allowed me to really take this story all the way," McIntyre said.

McIntyre was then asked whether the process of maintaining the momentum and building the feud whole Punk was sidelined was intimidating. He noted that he may have felt that way in the past, but he trusted the creative team, himself, and even Punk.

“Knowing and trusting our creative process now, myself as a performer, as much crap as I give Punk, rightfully so, he does know this industry, his brain is his gift, as psychotic as it is, and yeah, that’s something in the past I’ve been really worried about, keeping that momentum, but just knowing the process and trusting the process now with the team that we have, I know that we can keep elevating and elevating. Sometimes, I get told, ‘Maybe save this for another week.’ I’m thinking, ‘No, I’ll do it this week, and then I’ll top it next week.’ That’s my job, to keep elevating and elevating," McIntyre said.

McIntyre ultimately defeated Punk at WWE SummerSlam in a match where Seth Rollins was the guest referee.
