Eddie Kingston explains why he equates promos to therapy.
In a recent interview, Eddie Kingston explained why he doesn't like the word promo when discussing his time on the microphone in professional wrestling. For Kingston, these moments are therapy sessions. Having the freedom to talk on the microphone in professional wrestling provides Eddie with an outlet that no other combat sport allows.
“I’ve been talking shit my whole life, to be honest with you. People are like ‘Oh, you’re so great at promos’. These are not promos to me. This is therapy to me. So all the stuff I feel in my chest or in my stomach during the week where I can’t let out,” said Eddie. I can work out, I can do Muay Thai, I can have my girlfriend choke me out in Jiu-Jitsu, which she always does. She’s a black belt, [my belt is] eggshell-colored white. I’d rather just throw punches, that’s why I like Muay Thai. But the emotional stuff, I can't let out until I get in that ring and have a microphone. So people are like, ‘Everything you say feels so real!’ That's because it is," Kingston said to Freddie Prinze Jr. on Wrestling with Freddie.
Continuing on, he spoke about working in places that would prefer scripted promos, that he would always decline in favor of just being himself.
“Well, even if we were scripted, I've been in lower-level promotions— I guess, compared to AEW, I don't mean any disrespect, where they'll write stuff out for you. I always just ask them, ‘Hey, can I be myself?’ I know there is this whole thing with wrestlers against writers, or fans against writers. Let's all relax. Let's all calm down. Everything goes together at some point,” said Kingston.
Elsewhere in the interview, Eddie Kingston laughed about getting under the skin of certain fans whenever he brings up WWE. Read more here.
