Matt Makowski recalls bout with Charlie Dempsey at Bloodsport coming together.
Fans got a surprise at Josh Barnett's Bloodsport on April 4 as Charlie Dempsey was part of the opening introductions. Unlike Shayna Baszler, Dempsey was not advertised to compete at the event, but ended up facing independent standout and former MMA fighter Matt Makowski.
Makowski was originally scheduled to face AKIRA, but the bout was changed the day before with AKIRA facing Victor Benjamin and Dempsey being left without an opponent.
Appearing on In The Weeds with Jeremy Lambert & Joel Pearl, Makowski revealed when he found out about the bout.
"The day before. Josh was on Ariel Helwani's show and there was a tweet about Victor was supposed to wrestle Anthony Henry, but Anthony was injured so AKIRA and Victor were going to wrestle. I'm like, 'Okay.' I messaged Lauderdale [GCW promoter Brett Lauderdale] and was like, 'What are we doing?' He was like, 'You're going to wrestle Regal's kid.' That's how that went.
"I didn't really chat with Josh about it. From what I understand, Charlie was targeted to maybe be on as a surprise competitor on the show. I talked with him a little bit, but that's all I really got, is that he was maybe he was going to be on and they were trying to find somebody for him to work. Maybe they shuffled things around at the last minute."
Dempsey was victorious in the bout, winning by submission.
Dempsey mentioned Bloodsport on Tuesday's NXT.
