It was often said that "no one got higher than Rob Van Dam" on a frog splash, but that was before Montez Ford started wanting the smoke.
Ford leaps off the top rope with grace and flies through the air with great height before crashing down on his opponents with the frog splash. While Ford is in control of the leap, the height is actually something that scares. him.
"Yes. This is very true. I am afraid of heights," he told Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp. "So Batman’s also one of my favorite superheroes and Batman’s actually afraid of bats. I thought it was the same way. I know me and Batman aren’t the same person, but you haven’t seen us in the same room. But I will say I’ve took on that role in the same way in that if you’re afraid of something, then maybe just keep tackling it every time. But, yeah, I’m terrified every time."
When asked if there was a specific frog splash that he worried about the ending, Ford replied, "All of them. Because it’s so far up there. I’m just like, ‘Oh, man. I really pushed the button on this one.’ But it’s always a call back to as a kid. Used to pull out my grandmother’s mattresses from the basement, mattresses she didn’t use, and then we’d pull them out, put them in the yard and do frog splashes from the top on there. Wasn’t as [threatful] as it is now when you’ve got screaming fans and thirteen feet in the air, but that’s why I do it."
Bianca Belair, Ford's wife, is the one who told SRS of Ford's fear of heights when she was asked if she's ever worried about him every time he makes the leap of faith.
"Every time," she replied. "You know what’s even more crazy? He’s scared of heights. So I know when he’s up there, he’s scared and so that makes me scared. So he goes even higher and I’m just like, ‘How is he not freaking out right now?’"
Turns out, Ford is freaking out, but much like Batman, it's become his superpower.
