Hiroshi Tanahashi: If I Dont Aim For The Championship, It's Time To Retire

Hiroshi Tanahashi still has championship goals.

Tanahashi has never held the IWGP World Heavyweight Title, but is a former eight-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion. He hasn't held the belt since 2019 and has largely been involved in the IWGP United States Title scene since losing the IWGP Heavyweight Title. As 2023 gets underway, Tanahashi still has championship aspirations.

"This year, I want to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight belt and become champion. I want to be a force that helps the pro wrestling world stand up from the hard times, so please continue to support me," Tanahashi said at Bushiroad New Year's Grand Announcement (via Tokyo Sports). "Why now? Because there is a lot of attention and spread today. Some people may think, 'You're already a [legend],' but as long as I am a professional wrestler, I want to be a champion. If I no longer aim to be a champion, that's when I think it's time to retire. This is a statement of determination once again."

Tanahashi teamed with Keiji Muto & Shota Umino to defeat Tetsuya Naito, SANADA, & BUSHI at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17.
