"It was on March 21st at about 6:30pm. I was here at my house and matter of fact we were scheduled to leave the next day on the 22nd to go to (Los Angeles) for Wondercon," said Lawler "I had a stroke out of the clear blue. I was basically feeling fine...I said something to (his fiancée) Lauryn and she said 'what did you say?' and I realized then what I said didn't sound right," he continued.

Lawler implied he was in an intimate moment with his fiancée when his speech became slurred and half of his face became paralyzed. She drove Lawler directly to the hospital and he was attended to immediately. He said the stroke was a brain hemorrhage and his blood pressure was very high. He was in the hospital for three days without being able to speak well but woke up one morning being able to speak much better.

Lawler missed some of his engagements but he recovered in time to wrestle in New Orleans during WrestleMania week, host the WWE Hall of Fame, and do commentary on the WrestleMania 34 Kickoff show.
