Johnny Gargano On How Whether Or Not He Cares About Star Ratings

You don't earn the nickname Johnny Wrestling by being bad at wrestling.

Johnny Gargano is unquestionably one of the best performers on the WWE roster today. His rivalry with Tommaso Ciampa is a masterclass in long term and short term storytelling. All three matches have earned high marks from wrestling pundits. However, it's his match with Andrade "Cien" Almas in January that is being called the best NXT match ever.

Speaking to Alex McCarthy of GiveMeSport, Gargano gave his thoughts of receiving high marks from wrestling pundits.

"I take great pride in my work. To me, if the fans enjoy it and are having a good time and are making noise, that's really all that matters to me," he said. "But I am still a wrestling fan, historian, and purist at heart. So getting five stars is cool because people do care about that. It's a notch in my belt. But wrestling is subjective. What Dave Meltzer gave five stars, some people may give two or three stars. It's all personal preference. That's the beautiful thing about professional wrestling. It's all an art form."

Gargano's bout with Almas and first bout with Ciampa were given five stars by Meltzer. Gargano-Almas was the first WWE/NXT bout to receive five stars since the 2011 Money in the Bank match between John Cena and CM Punk.
