Katsuyori Shibata hopes to see the longtime rivals clash one last time.
NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi will retire at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom in January 2026. The year leading up to that point is expected to be full of major matches. Tanahashi kicked off 2025 with an exhibition match against Katsuyori Shibata at NJPW x AEW Wrestle Dynasty.

“I'm sad, [but] I hope you will cherish the remaining year of Hiroshi Tanahashi, the wrestler. I would also like to continue today's [match] at AEW," Shibata said.
Shibata, Tanahashi, and Shinsuke Nakamura were collectively known as the New Three Musketeers, and they all had an unforgettable rivalry. They have all gone their separate ways, though Shibata has crossed back over to NJPW through their relationship with AEW. Heading into Tanahashi's final year of in-ring competition, Shibata expressed his hope that the former world champion and Nakamura will be able to reunite somehow.
"It would be indispensable. [He] should work with [Nakamura]. too. There are various things depending on the company. But it's true that I entered the ring today for five minutes, even if it was in the form of an exhibition. I think I can move if I move. You have to make your own way. If you are in danger, there is no path. I think you should go without hesitation. If there is even one such moment [when the New Three Musketeers reunite], if there is, I would love it. I think there are things Tanahashi can do with his power. I know Nakamura might not like it,” Shibata said.
Tanahashi and Nakamura faced each other numerous times before Nakamura signed with WWE. They clashed at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 8. They have not shared the ring since 2016.
