Mistico is starting a new chapter.
On the October 30th episode of CMLL Informa, Mistico announced that he is relinquishing the CMLL World Historic Middleweight Championship because his body has changed, and he is closer to being a light heavyweight, rather than a middleweight. He also noted that he was beat up from so many defenses. Mistico also explained that he would be moving up in weight and going for the light heavyweight titles in the future.
“The news I’m going to give is good for many, but also sad for me. I am relinquishing this NWA/ CMLL World Historic Middleweight Title, and I will explain why. Things are changing, my body is evolving, I have other aspirations and be a different person and I feel that it is not fair for me to defend the title with that. What is fair was that CMLL does a tournament to give a shot to so many talents pushing through and what better way to do it than by having them compete for this title. I have a lot of love for this title because it was a belt my uncle, Tony Salazar, held and it was my first world title in CMLL back in 2005 against Averno. It will be an honor to hand the title to the winner of the tournament because it was the belt I ever won as a wrestler. I am already a former CMLL National Light Heavyweight Champion, but I was too heavy for the wrestling I like to do. I love to fly around, but I felt too heavy and had to drop weight because of that and relinquish the title then too. Now I can focus on those the World Light Heavyweight Title held by Averno, the National Light Heavyweight Title held by Esfinge, or heck, why not the World Historic Light Heavyweight Title held by Atlantis Jr.? It was a great thrill back then to be a Light Heavyweight champion then, so there is no better way to face the greats and hold a new belt.”
CMLL will hold a tournament for the vacant title, but additional details are currently unclear.
Mistico had held the title for 2,263 days, as he won it by defeating Ultimo Guerrero in 2018. He was the longest-reigning World Historic Middleweight Champion in the history of the title. Mistico last defended the championship against Volador Jr. at CMLL 71 Aniverario on July 15th, 2024.
