Murdoch seemingly had the title won at NWA When Our Shadows Fall, but the referee reversed Murdoch's victory and awarded the bout to Aldis by DQ. At The Gathering, Aldis defeated Murdoch to retain the title. After the match, Murdoch said he wanted one more shot and was willing to put his career on the line.
This marks Murdoch's first reign with the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Title. Aldis won the belt on October 21, 2018 at NWA 70 when he defeated Cody Rhodes. He held the belt for 1044 days, making 32 successful title defenses.
