Nicole Matthews is flattered to be recognized as an influence on the current generation of Canadian wrestling stars.
Speaking with Spencer Love of Love Wrestling, the Canadian wrestling icon was asked what it means to have names like KC Spinelli, Chelsea Green, and the Vörös Twins naming her as an influence. Here is what she had to say:
“It's pretty crazy. It's cool, like I am flattered. [It] makes you feel a little old sometimes. No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding. It's really cool. Especially, you know, with Spinelli, I was really young still when she was training, so like I don't think - I know she's very complimentary towards me when I get brought up, but like I don't think I really trained her. I was just kind of there when she was training full out, and same with Chelsea. Like, Chelsea's Chelsea. She did her own bit. The hustler to the extreme, right? She had great training with Storm, obviously. But I'm glad that she thinks that I helped her out in the beginning. That's really nice to hear. Voros, yeah, I was there since the beginning for them, and I'm really proud of them and how good they are. Yeah, it's really flattering. It's weird, because yesterday I was just training with Voros and Travis. And it was - Travis Williams. Sorry, I shouldn't just say one name. Travis Williams. And it was just weird because I was like, 'what else?' Like, I don't know, they're just so good at this point. I don't know what else we can do, but they still all come to training all the time and still want to learn. Yeah, it's pretty flattering to hear that though, for sure.”
She was then asked specifically about working with the Vörös Twins as part of The Shining and how's it has differed from her time working with [former faction] the Riot?
“I love working with the Vörös. I think we have a really good dynamic in our group. I'm kind of like, the serious, surly one of the group and they're like, more the Voros kind of personality and everything. We actually have quite similar wrestling styles. When we were both - when we weren't like working together, but we were all babyfaces, when we were on shows together I'd have to be like 'okay, what are you guys doing for your shine?' so that we're not doing the same thing. We have, like, kind of similar mindsets when it comes to that. We have similar athletic abilities and similar likes and dislikes of wrestling. So yeah, it's been great, because we're very much on the same wavelength when we're doing matches. And like, yeah, [I've had] a couple of really proud six-man's with them that I've loved. They're always so fun, and very dynamic, and never boring. So yeah. You know, working with younger talent like that, it kind of keeps you wanting to come up with creative ideas, too, so you're not getting complacent. And I've said once I become complacent in wrestling, I don't really want to wrestle anymore. So it's nice to have that for sure.”
The Vörös twins have gained some notoriety through TikTok where their videos have ammased nearly 22 million likes.
Matthews took part in the second annual Mae Young Classic. She defeated Isla Dawn in the first round of the tournament but lost to Tegan Knox in round two. She was regularly featured at DEFY Wrestling events and has competed for SHIMMER and ECCW in the past. In 2016, she wrestled Asuka on NXT television in Canada.
