Oklahoma State Athletic Commission Defers Intergender Wrestling Rule To State Legislature

The Oklahoma State Athletic Commission met on Tuesday to discuss a rule change regarding intergender wrestling.

A vote decided that the issue would be picked up in a legislative hearing.

According to OKC Fox, Commissioner Michael Stopp spoke about the rule and worried the issue of intergender matches might get "too political" if the Commission changed the rule on its own.

"Even if they are defined by statute as male and female, are we still going to allow them to wrestle together," Stopp said. "That's the question, and it's going to get lost. The rule will never pass."

In January, the Oklahoma Athletic Commission met over a transgender wrestler competing at an AEW event. Nyla Rose was the wrestler in question. She faced Alejandra Lion on the ROH on HonorClub tapings in December 2023. Having a transgender wrestler compete in what they deem an intergender match is against the OSAC rules.

AEW was back in Oklahoma for a show in February, but Rose was not part of the tapings.

Rose had a sense of humor about the commission's warning and has since launched a t-shirt with proceeds going to 2SLGBTQ+ Advocacy Group Freedom Oklahoma.
