WWE Raw (8/21/23) Results: Gunther Defends IC Title, New Day vs. Riddle & McIntyre, Shinsuke Speaks

WWE hosted its latest episode of Monday Night Raw on August 21, 2023. The episode features Gunther defending his WWE Intercontinental Championship against Chad Gable. Also, Shinsuke Nakamura will explain what he said to Seth Rollins last week.

Plus, Drew McIntyre & Matt Riddle take on Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods of The New Day.

WWE Raw (8/21/23) Results

- Sami Zayn kicks off the show in front of an electric crowd in Quebec City. He gets out one sentence before he's interrupted by Judgment Day. Sami Zayn tells them he didn't come alone, and Kevin Owens returns to Monday Night Raw. The Tag Team Champions fight off Judgment Day. A tag team match is made for later.

* The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) def. Matt Riddle & Drew McIntyre. The Viking Raiders interfered and pulled Drew McIntyre off the apron. Kofi Kingston hit the Trouble in Paradise for the victory.

- Post-match: The Viking Raiders attacked the New Day and Matt Riddle, but Drew McIntyre was able to make the save.

- Jackie Redmond interviewed Finn Balor & JD McDonagh. McDonagh said Balor was like his older brother, and he only wants Judgment Day to be stronger. Balor accuses Jackie of wanting to stir the pot on Judgment Day. Rhea Ripley & Dominik Mysterio tell Finn Balor that they need to discuss who will compete in the main event. McDonagh tries to tag along, but Ripley stops him.

- A video package recaps Gunther's story with Chad Gable. Gunther comments on the impending match via a pre-tape from earlier in the day. Chad Gable comments on the match before heading out to the ring.

* WWE Intercontinental Championship: Chad Gable defeated Gunther (c) by count-out after suplexing the WWE Intercontinental Champion into the timekeeper's area.

- Backstage, Gunther went off on the other members of Imperium. Ludwig Kaiser said he would fix the situation, and Giovanni Vinci was left alone, seemingly wondering what just happened.

- Byron Saxton interviewed Cody Rhodes. He says tonight is about Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, but he will watch the main event closely.

- Shinsuke Nakamura, in a vignette, explained what he said to Seth Rollins. Nakamura claims that he knows Rollins has a broken back, and it depends on finishing the job at Payback.

* Rhea Ripley def. Candice LeRae

- Raquel Rodriguez attacked Rhea Ripley after the match and announced that she was medically cleared to compete and will be challenging for the Women's World Championship at WWE Payback.

- Tommaso Ciampa vignette airs. He says references a "do it yourself" mentality, and taking over the game.

- The Miz comes out and says he will be remembered 20 years from now, while LA Knight is a flash in the pan. He introduces his opponent for the night, Akira Tozawa.

* Akira Tozawa def. The Miz. LA Knight was on commentary, and Miz got caught up in trying to showboat to him and was rolled up for his trouble.

- Miz shouts at the referee after the match. Knight enters the ring and hits Blunt Force Trauma on Miz.

- Drew McIntyre tries to tell Matt Riddle that he doesn't want to team with him. New Day comes by and says that they have something really special. They say they will be fighting the Viking Raiders next week but then offer a rematch to the team they have dubbed McRiddle.

- Becky Lynch comes to the ring and cuts a promo about her tenacity. Trish Stratus interrupts. She speaks about her own tenacity and always being thrown into the deep end. She promises Becky won't survive their Steel Cage Match at WWE Payback. Becky announces that she'll be facing Zoey Stark next week in Falls Count Anywhere.

- Backstage, Byron Saxton asks Chelsea Green and Piper Niven to discuss what being tag champions is like. Green claims she had to get permission from WWE management before making their reign official. Niven orders Green to go. The two women enter the arena for their next match.

* Chelsea Green & Piper Niven def. Katana Chance & Kayden Carter

- Jackie Remond interviewed Seth Rollins, who confirms that he does have two fractures in his lumbar spine, but he says that if Shinsuke Nakamura is going to bring his family into the mix, he better be ready to face him like a man. He says they will have a confrontation next week.

* Judgment Day (Finn Balor & Damian Priest) def. Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens by DQ. JD McDonagh comes out and tries to hand Finn Balor the Money in the Bank briefcase. Kevin Owens catches it instead and hits Balor in front of the referee for the DQ.

- After the bell, Judgment Day attacks the Tag Team Champions. Cody Rhodes steps in to help Zayn and Owens. Cody says we can't finish Raw that way after fending off Judgment Day. There are three of them and three members of Judgment Day. Adam Pearce makes a six-man tag.

* Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens def. Judgment Day (Finn Balor, Damian Priest & Dominik Mysterio w/ Rhea Ripley)
