Rey Mysterio Believes His Time As 'The Giant Killer' Without A Mask In WCW Eventually Led Him To WWE

Rey Mysterio reflects on the time in his WWE career where he was unmasked.

While Rey Mysterio is known for his work as a masked luchador, even being considered by some as the greatest masked luchador of all time, there was a time in his career where he did work without a mask on weekly global television and even in a major motion picture, the WCW movie, "Ready to Rumble."

At WCW SuperBrawl IX in 1999, Rey Mysterio and Konnan lost a match to The Outsiders, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, and as a result of the match, Rey Mysterio was forced to unmask.

The very next night on Raw, you would beat Kevin Nash in a singles match and become known as "the Giant Killer."

Even though Rey Mysterio would eventually become defined by his mask when he resurfaced with his mask on upon arriving in WWE in 2002, Rey Mysterio stated on a recent episode of the Kurt Angle Show podcast that he believes that his time spent without a mask in WCW led to a push that led to him working with bigger guys and eventually, that opened doors for him in WWE.

"I don't think so. When I lost the mask, the next night I faced Kevin Nash and that's when the 'Giant Killer' came up. Sometimes I think to myself, 'If I hadn't lost the mask, would I have gotten the push that I got against these bigger guys?' I don't know, but because it happened, there was a positive side to it and that's when I started working with bigger guys, which eventually opened up the doors for me in WWE."

Elsewhere in the interview, Rey Mysterio talks about not believing his son, Dominik Mysterio, was ready for his debut at SummerSlam 2020. Learn more here.
