Rey Mysterio: When I Have Nothing More To Prove, That's When I'll Step Back

At age 45, Rey Mysterio is still going strong in WWE. He continues to be spotlighted on WWE Raw, recently challenging Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series 2019 and holding the WWE United States Title.

And while Rey seemingly has nothing left to prove in the sport as he is already considered one of the greatest and most influential luchadors of all-time, Rey has no plans on hanging his boots up just yet. Speaking to BT Sport, Rey discussed how his break from WWE in 2015 was beneficial and prepared him for his current WWE run.

Billie Starkz Reflects On Teaming With Satoshi Kojima At AEW WrestleDream 2023

"The moment I left WWE, for me, it was taking a break," he said. "Traveling so much, being on the road, wrestling 4-5 days a week. I needed it. My body, my mind, and my heart needed it in order for me to pick back up the passion that I once had. And it happened. I think it was best for business, it was best for WWE and the Rey Mysterio brand. It gave me the opportunity to re-invent myself and come back and still show...I always step in the ring thinking 'I gotta prove I can still go.' I get a lot of feedback like 'Rey, you don't have to do much anymore. Your name is already...you've made your mark.' But to me, when I feel like I have nothing more to prove, that's when I feel like I need to step back. It's still exciting to me and emotional."

Mysterio is currently linked with Humberto Carrillo in a feud with Angel Garza and Andrade. The four men have been trading hammerlock DDTs on the floor in recent weeks. Mysterio is also helping his son Dominik prepare for an eventual WWE run.
