On the May 22 episode of WWE Speed, Tyler Bate defeated Apollo Crews to earn a shot at the WWE Speed Championship. He challenged Ricochet for the title on the May 24 episode. This marked Ricochet's first defense of the title.
As a championship match, the bout had a five-limit time limit, rather than WWE Speed's typical three-minute time limit. The two competitors battled back and forth in a hard-fought match. Bate gained momentum with the airplane spin, and he dove onto Ricochet at ringside. Ricochet rallied and caught Bate with the Recoil. He then clinched the win with a handspring cutter.

Ricochet became the first WWE Speed Champion by beating Johnny Gargano in the finals of a tournament for the title.
